Backflow prevention services

The annual test your water district asks for, with the results filed for you, and minor repairs when a valve fails. New installations and replacements need a licensed plumbing contractor.

  • Backflow Testing & Certification

Annual and new-installation testing of RPZ, double check and pressure vacuum breaker assemblies, with the test report filed for your water utility.

  • Minor Backflow Repairs

Minor repairs to failed or leaking assemblies using the manufacturer’s repair kit for check valves, relief valves, springs and seals, followed by a retest.

Devices we work on

RPZ: reduced pressure zone assembly
Two independent check valves with a pressure-monitored relief valve between them. Used where the hazard is high, such as chemical injection, boilers, medical equipment and many commercial buildings. Protects against both backpressure and backsiphonage. Must be installed above ground where its relief valve can drain.
DCVA: double check valve assembly
Two independent check valves in series. Used for lower (non-health) hazards and on many fire sprinkler systems. Protects against both backpressure and backsiphonage.
PVB: pressure vacuum breaker
A spring-loaded check valve and an air inlet that opens if supply pressure drops. Common on lawn irrigation systems. Protects against backsiphonage only, and must be installed above the highest sprinkler head or outlet it serves.

Fire lines often use detector versions of these assemblies (DCDA, RPDA), and some sites use spill-resistant vacuum breakers (SVB). Which device a property needs is set by the hazard and by your water utility’s rules.
